Mehr als 50 Workshops mit mehr als 200 internationalen Expert:innen, das war die NIGHTS2022 in Zürich. Wir sind immer noch tief beindruckt von den intensiven Diskussionen und der positiven Stimmung, welche während der ganzen Konferenz geherrscht hat.

The Nights 2022 was with more than 600 participants (without the party) from 25 countries a big success.  We are still deeply impressed by the intensive discussions and the positive atmosphere that prevailed throughout the conference. You also contributed to this, thank you very much! It was a real pleasure to welcome you all in Zurich.

About the NIGHTS Conference

Die NIGHTS – die international wichtigste Konferenz zu urbaner Freizeitkultur – bietet alle zwei Jahre die ideale Plattform, um Fachwissen aus den Bereichen Kultur, Stadtentwicklung, Gesundheit & Sicherheit und Ökonomie zu verknüpfen. Mit dem Ziel gemeinsam und unabhängig von thematischen und strukturellen Grenzen mögliche Entwicklungspfade für die nächtliche Stadt von morgen zu entwickeln. Damit diese möglichst liebens- und lebenswerte sowie konfliktarme und zukunftsweisende Bedingungen bietet. Die NIGHTS Konferenz fand bis jetzt achtmal in den Städten Berlin, Brüssel, Padua und Zürich statt. In Berlin jeweils als Joint Venture mit der Stadt nach Acht Konferenz. www.nights-conference.org

The NIGHTS is the most important conference in Europe regarding urban leisure activities, especially at night. The NIGHTS-conference invites all people involved in leisure, nightlife, and festival culture, independently if they represent the industry, science, politics, culture or administration, to take part. This makes the NIGHTS conference to the ideal platform for international networking and exchange across all professional boarders. With the aim of jointly developing possible paths for the nocturnal city of tomorrow, independently of thematic and uniform boundaries. Night Culture

Das Nachtleben fördert, durch seinen niederschwelligen Zugang, die kulturelle Teilhabe der Bevölkerung. Sei dies in Form einer aktiven kulturellen Mitgestaltung, z.B. als Lichtkünstlerin oder einfach als schweigende Geniesserin. Doch zu selten wird das Nachtleben in der breiten öffentlichen Meinung, vor allem in der Politik, als Kultur bezeichnet. Hier zeigt sich immer noch ein Graben zwischen der Hochkultur, wie Theater und Oper, und Populärkultur, wie es das Nachtleben darstellt. Auch wenn dieses oft als unpolitisch bezeichnet wird, zeigt die Erfahrung, dass Musik und Tanz integrierend, vermittelnd und das Nachtleben bei der Verbreitung politischer Anliegen eine wichtige Rolle spielen kann.

The nightlife promotes the cultural participation of the population through its low-threshold access. Be this in the form of active cultural participation, e.g. as a light artist, or simply as a silent connoisseur. However, nightlife is too seldom referred to as a culture in the general public opinion, especially in politics. There is still a gap between the high culture, such as theater and opera, and popular culture, such as nightlife. Although the latter is often described as apolitical, experience shows that music and dance can be integrating, mediating, and nightlife can play an important role in spreading political concerns.

Night Economy

Die Nachtökonomie hat sich zu einem wichtigen Wirtschaftsfaktor entwickelt. Das Potential liegt dabei nicht nur im Wirtschaftlichen, beispielsweise bei der Anzahl an Arbeitsplätzen, das Nachtleben setzt auch Trends. Von diesen profitiert nicht nur die Gastronomie, die Musikindustrie und andere Bereiche der Kreativwirtschaft, verschiedenste Industriebereiche haben das kreative Potential der Nacht schon für sich entdeckt. Dies führt dazu, dass sich im Umfeld des Nachtlebens oft weitere Kreativschaffende aus anderen Bereichen ansiedeln, z.B. aus der Design- und Musikindustrie.

The night economy has developed into an important economic driver. The potential is not only to be found in the economy, for example with respect to the number of jobs it creates, but nightlife also sets trends. Not only the gastronomy, the music industry and other areas of the creative industries benefit from these trends, but a wide variety of industrial sectors have already discovered the creative potential of the night for themselves. As a result, other creative professionals from other areas, e.g. from the design and music industry, often settle in the nightlife environment.

Health & Safety

Nicht selten drehen sich städtische Sicherheitsdiskussionen um das Leben in der Nacht. Von aussen entsteht der Eindruck eines gefährlichen Vergnügens, wo um die eigene Sicherheit gefürchtet werden muss. Partyfeiern ist Spass und pure Lebensfreude, auch Exzesse gehörten schon immer zur Nacht. Dabei hat das individuelle Risikoverhalten nicht nur einen Einfluss auf die persönliche Gesundheit, auch wird dabei das Verhalten beeinflusst und es können durchaus auch Aussenstehende gefährdet sein.

It is not uncommon for urban safety and security discussions to revolve around life at night. From the outside, the perception is one of a dangerous pleasure where one has to fear for one’s own safety. Partying is fun and pure joie de vivre, and excess has always been part of the night. Not only does an individual’s risk-taking affect their personal health, but it also influences their behavior and can also endanger outsiders.

City Development

Zunehmend wird der innerstädtische öffentliche Raum auch in der Nacht genutzt. Diese auch als Mediterranisierung bezeichnete Entwicklung bedeutet vor allem für junge Menschen eine erhöhte Lebensqualität. Für die Nachtstadtentwicklung handelt es sich bei der nächtlichen Städteplanung um eine der grössten aktuellen Herausforderungen. Die Situation wird dabei dadurch verschärft, dass in den letzten Jahrzehnten innerstädtische Freiräume immer weniger geworden sind. Die Frage stellt sich, welche Innovationen die Städte brauchen, um ihre nächtliche Attraktivität auch zukünftig beizubehalten.

Inner-city public areas are increasingly being used at night as well. This development, also known as mediterranization, signifies an improved quality of life, especially for young people. For the development of the city at night, urban planning at night is one of the greatest current challenges. The situation is thereby complicated by the fact that inner-city open spaces have become increasingly scarce in recent decades. The question arises as to what innovations cities need in order to maintain their nocturnal attractiveness in the future.

Public Day

Dieser richtet sich nicht nur an die Konferenzgäste, sondern auch an die interessierte lokale Bevölkerung.

Das Programm beinhaltet Gesprächsrunden, Vorträge, Kunst, Musik, Filme, Performances und fliesst übergangslos in eine Partynacht. Im Vordergrund stehen Rave Awareness, internationale Underground- Musikkollektive, Empowerment von Frauen*, Microdosing Workshop, die weltweite Situation von Queers, Freiräume und das Recht auf Stadt.

This day is intended not only for the participants of the conference, but also for the interested local population. The program includes discussion panels, lectures, art, music, films, performances and seamlessly transitions into a night of partying. The focus will be on rave awareness, international underground music collectives, empowerment of women, micro-dosing workshops, the global situation of queers, open spaces and the right to the city.

Nights Science

Im Rahmen der NIGHTS2022 in Zürich findet erstmals die NIGHT(Science) statt. Für 4 Panels am Freitag wird es einen Call for Abstracts geben. Die Abstracts werden von einem Scientific Committe einer Peer Review unterzogen, ausgewählt und die Autorinnen als Referentinnen eingeladen. Ziel der NIGHTS(Science) ist es, die Forschung und die Akteure der Nacht näher zusammenzubringen und den Behörden einen Zugang zu Forschenden zu schaffen.

For the first time, the NIGHT(S)-Science will be held as part of the NIGHTS2022 in Zurich. There will be a call for abstracts for 4 panels on Friday. The abstracts will be peer reviewed by a scientific committee, selected and the authors invited as speakers. The goal of the NIGHT(S)-Science is to bring the research community and those involved in the night closer together and to provide government authorities with access to researchers.

NIGHT(S)-Science aims to promote know-how transfer between academia and the private and public sector. Submitted abstracts will be double blind peer-reviewed by our international scientific committees. Submit your abstract until 31. August 2022, more information

International Night Ambassador Meeting

Im Rahmen der NIGHTS findet zum vierten Mal das Internationale Nacht Advokat:innen Treffen statt (Night Ambassador Meeting). Nachtbürgermeister:innen und Kommissions-Vertreter:innen aus über 30 Städten finden sich jeweils zum Austausch und der Entwicklung internationaler Projekte ein.

As part of the NIGHTS, the International Night Ambassador Meeting will take place for the fourth time. Night mayors and committee representatives from over 30 cities come together to exchange ideas and to develop international projects.
